Japan Travel Guide - 11 Days Spring Itinerary

In the last years, Japan become favourite country to visit for Indonesian. It is only 10 years ago, going to Japan is seen as expensive trip. But now, as Indonesian millennials like to travel much, combined with cheap tickets and social media influencers taking photo-shots in Japan, make Japan seems a must visit country in their bucket list.

The most convenient time to visit Japan is on spring (around April) and autumn (around November), because the temperature is just right plus there are many colorful flowers and leaves to see. We happened to visit Japan in both occasion and want to share what to do and where to go in Japan for first-timer.

FIRST THING FIRST - PREPARATION

This section may be different for every person, but you can use it as comparison to your plan:
  • We use ANA (All Nippon Airways) , which priced at IDR 4.6 Million (return trip) from Jakarta to Narita.
  • We go for 11 days, arrived in Japan in the evening of Day 1 (March 27th, 2016)
  • We bring 2 medium (15 kgs) luggage, and ended buying 1 small luggage there
  • On Spring and Autumn, the temperature is around 2 - 15 Celcius. Depending on how you cope with cold, you can bring just a jacket or a sweater and a coat. Since wind become more factor for us to feel cold, bringing hat, scarves, and mask is also recommended
  • We stayed at several hotels in Tokyo and Osaka.
    • Tokyo : Keio Plaza Hotel (Shinjuku Area), New Otani Hotel (Akasaka Area), Sheraton Grande (Tokyo Bay Area)
    • Osaka : Ibis Style Hotel (Shinsaibashi Area), Agora Regency Hotel (Sakai Area)
  • We buy "expensive" tickets online (National JR Pass, Universal Studio Japan, Disney Sea)
  • We rent Wi-fi internet from Jakarta from Dwidaya Tour at IDR 70.000/day unlimited. Wifi can connect up to 10 devices, so it's more cheap than sim card if you're travelling in groups.
  • We bring enough money, Credit Cards, and Debit BCA card (yes you can use it in Japan ATM with a same fee as other Indonesian Bank ATMs)
  • As First-Timer, it is recommended to visit Three Main Cities in Japan; Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Then you can go explore other places on next visit (yes, we guarantee you will want another visit after your first)

Okay, What to do if you have 11 days in Japan?

For first time visit to Japan, even with 11 days, exploring 3 major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka might not enough. When we go for the first time, we looked at our map and divided the Tokyo into imaginary area, the south, west, north, east, and central. Our Keio Hotel, is located at Shinjuku, which in our term is located in West Tokyo.

We list all the tourist attraction in each area and planning the route. So on the following guide, we will also provide the area name. It helps you to intuitively know where you are relatively to your hotel, and if you hear or know other attraction in Tokyo which has not been listed by us, you can add it to the area day.

DAY 1 - ARRIVED AT NARITA AIRPORT

People usually arrived in Japan on two times; on morning (overnight flight) and evening (morning flight). From there you can take Trains (local or express), local buses, taxis, or shuttle bus to Hotel (if you stay in five stars hotel). We took the Narita Express to Shinjuku since we stayed on that area. Since we arrived in the evening, we had our dinner and went straight to the Hotel (Keio Plaza).

Shinjuku area is suitable for people who want to experience night activities since it can be called as a "heart" of Tokyo. It has the crowded train station in Tokyo (second to Tokyo Station), many restaurant, bars, and all shops open till midnight.

When arrived in Japan, you should purchase IC Card (PASMO or SUICA) as soon as possible at the ticketing machine for effective travel. The alternative is to buy ticket every time we used the train and believe me it is not convenient.

If you are travel heavily using public transport (i.e. trains) like us, you should take notice that there are 2-3 trains operator in the city. Both PASMO and SUICA card can be used in either lines.

But if you happened to have JR Pass, you can also use JR Pass on Japan Railway operated Lines. How to recognise whether a line is operated by Japan Railway? Usually they have JR word attached to the line, e.g. JR Yamanote Line. JR operated lines usually have an officer posted on the edge of the ticketing gate. To use JR Pass, you just show it to the officer, whether you going in or out from the station and they will let you pass. I will talk about JR Pass in other section below.
Tips. Every station in Japan will provide a locker that can be paid 100-700 Yen, depends on the size of the locker. If you happen to carry out too many things, you can rent the locker for couple hours until couple days. This rent time depend on the station. As far as I know, Tokyo station allowed rented locker up to 5 days.

WAKO TONKATSU

We are so hungry then decided to grab something on our way to hotel. In Shinjuku area there's a food court building full of food. We pick tonkatsu for our dinner.

ICHIRAN RAMEN

If you are fast eater and do not like to do idle chat after meals, you should try Ichiran. They have branches both in Tokyo and Osaka.

As other Ramen outlet in Japan, when you approach the restaurant, you will be greeted by machines. There you enter the coins and choose your menu. After choosing, you should queueing. Please notice that even you come in group, you come in individually. The table is provided for one people. Separate with others with wooden partition.

After you get your seat, you are given a paper form to customize your Ramen; spicy or not, additional toppings, etc. They have forms in Japanese and English. After finishing your form. You can push the bell, shortly after, the curtain in front of you will be open. And a person will take your order. Wait for a moment and your order will be coming up. If you want extra noodles you can call them again.

This restaurant's system make sure that the visitors not taking long time in the restaurant for idle chat and make sure to have higher capacity. However, this concept is still new in Japan so many people visit the place and resulting in long queue anyway. However it is a good experience to try while in Japan.

TOKYO TOWER

A visit to Tokyo is not perfect if we do not visit Tokyo Tower, so it was our first destination. You should see this red tower too. If you want to, you can access the top for 1600 yen including One Piece theme park. Tokyo tower is also nice when dark because all the lights will up and make a great view.

We decided not to go up, because (1) Tokyo Tower is not the highest building anymore in Tokyo (2) Tokyo Tower is more beautiful is seen as a part of the Tokyo skyline, not for seeing skyline, and (3) We are not a fan of One Piece.

SNOOPY MUSEUM

After that from Tokyo Tower, you can continue walk to Snoopy Museum. Notice that it is quite a long walk. But if you visit on Spring, the weather is favourable for the long walk without tire you down. Now, almost everything have museum in Japan. The entry fares of these museums are around 2000 yen. Inside the museum we can't take pictures, only outside the museum is allowed.

Here is some pictures taken in Snoopy Museum

ROPPONGI HILLS

A Short walk from Snoopy Museum and you will reach Roppongi Hills. Here you can see the Tokyo skyline. It will cost you around 1800 yen which is also included a ticket for Mori Art Museum. Additionally you can pay 500 yen more to access the Sky Deck, where you can see Tokyo in 360 from above. This place can be visited both daylight and night. If you happen go to the Sky Deck at night, you must bring jacket because it's very cold and super windy up there. There is a friendly staff who will take picture for you and you can buy it downstairs for 2000 yen (both hardcopy and, unfortunately, low quality softcopy).

OMOTESANDO - HARAJUKU AREA

From Roppongi Hills, you can take the train to Harajuku Station. There are many unique places to visit there; Meiji Jingu Shrine, Takeshita Street, and Omotesando High End Shoppes.

MEIJI JINGU SHRINE

Note that All shrine in Japan is accessible for free. Meiji Jingu is a shrine for Emperor Meiji which is upon his death is deified. In Meiji Jingu there's also a sacred tree that has a special wishing wall surrounding it's trunk. You can write your prayer or wishes on the wooden tablet and hang it on the wall. You can buy the wooden table for 100 yen. Beside that there's also an omikuji,  a fortune teller in Japan. For 100 yen you can see your fortune. This omikuji and wishing wall/tree often found in most shrine and temple around Japan.

After visit to Meiji Jingu, you can visit its surrounding. The price are reasonable and you can find many unique and stylist things here. Here is some spot which we find interesting and recommend you to visit:

ZAKU ZAKU CROQUANT

Famous for it's Choux (creamy custard filling in crunchy bread)  for 250 Yen and soft ice cream. Hidden gem in the alley of Takeshita Street. You will easily  recognise this place because you will find a queue in front of their store.

LUKE'S LOBSTER

This is one of most favourite snack in Tokyo. Mostly you will find a long queue in front of this place. We queue about 20 minutes before tried their lobster roll (regular) for 1.068 Yen. Actually this is just a simple stuff, toasted butter with split top bun, add some mayo, lemon sauce, and pure LOBSTER with secret recipe. This is good enough but not really blown away our tastebud.

Luke’s Lobster Rolls are available till sold out, so coming at opening hours might be less time consuming.

Another famous place in Tokyo is the Imperial Palace and Imperial East Garden. This Palace is only open for public at January 2nd and December 23rd. Furthermore, guided tours are available for the rest of the year at 10.00 and 13.30 (no buildings are enter) , except for Mondays and Sundays. Advance reservation is recommended, but you can book reservation onsite at Kikyomon Gate. Too bad we are unable to join the tour guide due to the time but we can stroll around the East Garden.

ASAKUSA SENSOJI SHRINE

Another famous shrine to visit is Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon Temple). We recommend you to go there after going to imperial palace. Beyond the main hall, there's a five storied pagoda. Shopping street lead from the outer gate into the temple second gate. You can also rent Kimono here for strolling around Asakusa.

There is also Omikuji here.

If you got regular or good fortune, you should take it with you. But sometimes when you got the bad fortune, you can tied your paper on the string to avoid the bad fortune.

You can find many food stall in here, I recommend this melon pan and yuzu ice cream for you to try.

UENO PARK

After Asakusa, if you are on the day, where Sakura is blooming, you can try Ueno Park where locals usually do Hanami (Watching the Sakura by eating and drinking with friends and relatives underneath it). It also have Ueno Zoo, if you happen to bring children with you. Too bad that when we visited here, the Sakura is not yet fully bloomed.

TOKYO SKY TREE

Alternatively, from Ueno, you can go to Tokyo Sky Tree. Another tower where you can see Tokyo Skyline, including Tokyo Tower.

SHIBUYA

Famous street and district in Tokyo. Over a dozen major department store can be found here. This also the most busiest street and intersection in Tokyo.

After all of this visit you should reward yourself a good rest in your Hotel.

DAY 4 - OSAKA

Last two days, have covered most of Tokyo (except for Shibuya, which we are plan to visit later). So we go to Osaka for our next destination.

The most obvious way to go to Osaka is by using Shinkansen. It took around 2 hours to reach Osaka from Tokyo. We activated the National JR Pass on this day and will be valid for 7 days ahead. The National JR Pass has 3 validation date; 7 days, 14 days and 21 days. This 7 days pass is around 271 USD.

MORE ABOUT JR PASS FOR SHINKANSEN

NAMBA and DOTONBORI
Noted that PASMO and SUICA cannot be used here. You must buy another card named ICOCA. JR Pass also unavailable to use in city trains.

After arrived at Osaka, we spent most of our time strolling at Shinsaibashi and Namba. You can find many restaurant and shopping along the street. Osaka is famous for it's takoyaki, and other than that you can find Gyukatsu Motomura, one of the finest beef katsu in Namba. You can find more detail about Gyukatsu Motomura in my other post here.

DAY 5 - OSAKA

UNIVERSAL STUDIO JAPAN

One of the most visited theme park in Osaka is the Universal Studio Japan. Famous for its Harry Potter theme park. You will spend one full day in this place. Admission ticket can only be buy at USJ Official Partner. Especially on this peek season the crowd must be very high. To avoid the long queue, you can buy the Universal Express Pass for saving time. They have express pass for 4 or 7 attraction.

For 11 days we spent in Japan, it's really unfortunate that only on this day, when we go to Universal Studio Japan it raining so hard from afternoon till evening. So basically no proper pictures can be taken, but actually we still can play all the ride with a touch of shower rain and it's freezing cold up there.

DAY 6 - HIMEJI SIDE TRIP

If you use JR Pass, it is economical to have base in Osaka and visit surrounding area using Shinkansen. This way, you can save energy on transferring luggage between hotels.

One of recommended visit is Himeji Castle, located in Himeji, west of Osaka. This white castle is opened to public ( from 9.00 until 17.00 ) and we can go inside it. We paid 1040 yen to go inside the castle and spent around 1-2 hours to explore the castle inside.

DAY 7 -  KYOTO

Kyoto is not a large city, but full of heritage and cultural attraction. To fully explore this area will need 2 days. Note that Osaka and Kyoto only a station away, so on our trip, we decided to kept stay in Osaka. But if you want experience Japan heritage, you may want to try to stay a night or two in Ryokan, an authentic Japanese traditional home.

Note that some area are accessible by trains, while other area is accessible by city Bus. Trains and Buses are accepting ICOCA for payment (same like Osaka). But for Bus, we recommend you to buy day pass, which you can buy from the driver (just ask him kindly) or in station.

Here is some places we recommend to see in Kyoto

FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE

Must visited shrine in Kyoto is Fushimi Inari Shrine (Fushimi Inari Taisha) or also known as Thousand of torii gates. This is a shrine for the God Inari (The Fox God), so you will see many Fox statue along the shrine.  This site is famous after the Memoir of Geisha film.

NIJO CASTLE

Many said that Nijo Castle is more worth to visit than Kyoto Imperial Palace, because this is the residence for Tokugawa Shoguns when visiting emperor in Kyoto. It is also the place for Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu to return the Authority to Imperial Court.

A tour in main building will give you insight of how the shogunate business is conducted here. From visitors rooms, the chirping corridor, and shogun rest quarters, this is a must visit building. Nijo also have beautiful garden surrounding the castle.

KIYOMIZUDERA

The cherry blossom starting to bloom in Kyoto, near the Kiyomizudera temple. At that moment Kiyomizudera's main hall is on construction until March 2020. But you still be able to enter the main hall during the renovation.

MENBAKAICHIDAI RAMEN

If you want to visit someplace unique but only famous for tourists not locals, then we propose to come to Menbakaichidai Ramen a.k.a Fire Ramen. It is slightly on the north side of Nijo Castle.

The place capacity is just for eight persons at a time. The unique is you have to enter as a group of eight. So even in a group there's fast eaters and they get out first, and you are next in line, you still can't enter until the last person in the previous group is finished. This way we advise you to come not on normal eating time. The waiting time is about 40 minutes.

When you enter the restaurant, you are to be seated, then the owner will ask for your handphone, put it into a selfie stick,  and set it into video mode so make sure you have sufficient memory to take videos.

The Fire Ramen is a ordinary Ramen, with special flammable liquid on the top of the Ramen. The owner will prepare 8 portion of Ramen and then prepare the flame. Then he will put it one by one. Creating a flame experience.

The Ramen taste itself is not bad. But the price is slightly more expensive than other Ramen. That is for an Unique Experience though. The owner is also friendly and can speak English. They will chat with you while you eat and gladly give you some tips exploring Kyoto. Watch this video for more details.

Tenryuji Temple, one of the most important temple in Kyoto. There is beautiful landscape garden, features a central ponds surrounded by rocks and pine trees.

DAY 9 - BACK TO TOKYO

The best thing about Spring in Japan is none other than witness the Cherry Blossom blooming there. Many touristy spot of this Cherry Blossom around Tokyo; Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, Chidorigafuchi, Ueno Park, Yoyogi Park, etc.

Japanese people often do hanami during the spring time to welcome the spring season by picnic under the Cherry Blossom trees. We went to 2 spots in Tokyo for the cherry blossoms and took several picture of these mesmerizing cherry blossoms tree.
More detail of my Cherry Blossoms post in here

CHIDORIGAFUCHI

SHINJUKU GYOEN NATIONAL PARK

DAY 10 -  TOKYO BAY

TOKYO DISNEY SEA

Tokyo Disney Land have unique features which until I write this post, is the only one in the world; Disney Sea. Since it is located a little bit below Central Tokyo, we recommend you to stayed a night at in-area hotel so we didn't waste much time to go to Disney Sea. We stayed at Sheraton Grande Hotel at the Tokyo Bay. If you come by Trains, the Hotel Check In area is available not far from the station. So you can just drop all your luggage and have fun in Disney Land, then at night, you can find your luggage in your room.

Other than Disney Sea there's also Disneyland Tokyo here and you can visit both of them buy buying 2 days pass ticket. One day ticket cost 7400 Yen and 2 days ticket cost 13.200 Yen. Admission ticket can be buy online here or offline thru tour and travel agencies.

Tips. Disney Sea didn't sell any Express pass like Universal Studio, but they do have FASTPASS distribution sign near the entrace of the participating attractions (8 attractions used this fastpass). Check the Return Time displayed on this sign. If the Return Time works for you, insert your valid Disney admission ticket or Annual Passport into the FASTPASS machine. Since you can only take one FASTPASS for the next two hours, if you visit Disney Sea for a whole day, you can take FASTPASS about three times

DAY 11 - BACK TO JAKARTA

On Eleventh Day, you will start fall in love with Japan, and feel that eleven days is too short to visit Japan. But I suggest you to take it slow on last day, and book an airport transfer. This way you can go home refreshed rather than tired.

Hope my itinerary and explanation here can be useful and help you when you want to go to Japan. Feel free to ask me about Japan and I will try my best to answer it.
